Discovering the Cradle of Armenian Winemaking: Hin Areni Winery

Armenia is a country steeped in rich history and tradition, with winemaking being one of its most ancient practices. Among the regions most celebrated for their winemaking heritage is Vayots Dzor, and within it, the village of Areni stands out as a symbol of this ancient craft. For millennia, this area has been the cradle of Armenian winemaking, home to indigenous grape varietals that have been cultivated and perfected over centuries.

At the heart of this tradition is Hin Areni Winery, a beacon of Armenian winemaking excellence. Hin Areni combines the historic traditions of winemaking with state-of-the-art modern technology to produce wines that are both authentic and innovative. Our mission is to open the doors of this historic region to the world, showcasing the unique and indigenous Armenian grape varietals that have thrived here for thousands of years.

The cornerstone of our winery is the Areni grape, a varietal that encapsulates the beauty and complexity of Armenian winemaking. At Hin Areni, we strive to ensure that the Areni grape has the chance to shine, allowing it to reveal its full potential and beauty. By doing so, we enable Armenian winemaking to proudly display its quality on the global stage.

Our winery’s design was crafted by Mario Japaz, a renowned winery design expert from Argentina. His expertise has helped us create a space that marries tradition with innovation. All of our winemaking equipment is modern and originates from Italy and France, ensuring that we have the best tools to produce high-quality wines. Our consulting winemaker, Didier Cornillon from France, brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience, further enhancing the quality of our wines.

At Hin Areni, we believe in the importance of hands-on care and attention to detail. This begins in our vineyards, where we hand-pick each grape to ensure only the best fruit is used. After harvesting, the grapes are hand-selected and undergo gentle pressing in a pneumatic press. This careful handling preserves the integrity and flavor of the grapes, setting the stage for exceptional wine production.

Our storage process is equally meticulous, with temperature control managed in stainless steel tanks to ensure optimal fermentation and aging conditions. For our red wines, we use oak barrels made from trees grown on the lush slopes of Artsakh, which impart unique flavors and characteristics to the wine. This combination of traditional techniques and modern technology allows us to produce wines that are both true to their roots and reflective of contemporary winemaking standards.

Hin Areni Winery has the capacity to process over 250 tons of grapes, enabling us to produce a significant quantity of wine while maintaining our commitment to quality. All our wines are single-varietal (monocepage), made from 100% Areni Noir and 100% Voskehat grapes. This focus on single-varietal wines allows us to highlight the unique characteristics and flavors of these indigenous grapes, offering a pure and unadulterated taste of Armenian winemaking.

Our dedication to preserving and promoting Armenian winemaking traditions is at the core of everything we do at Hin Areni. By combining the best of old-world techniques with new-world innovation, we are able to create wines that not only honor our heritage but also stand out on the global stage. As we continue to grow and share our wines with the world, we remain committed to showcasing the rich history and exceptional quality of Armenian winemaking.

In conclusion, Hin Areni Winery is more than just a producer of fine wines; it is a custodian of a proud and ancient tradition. Our commitment to quality, authenticity, and innovation ensures that every bottle of Hin Areni wine is a true representation of the beauty and richness of Armenian winemaking. We invite wine enthusiasts from around the world to join us in discovering and celebrating the unique flavors and heritage of Vayots Dzor and Areni. Cheers to the timeless art of Armenian winemaking!
